Home Work - Regional identity in Greek yogurt advert
Regional identity is things
that stand out to represent a country, region or nation E.G clothes, location,
weather etc.In this clip I will pick out the different techniques in order to work
out the regional identity of the clip.
In this clip regional
identity can be shown through the use of camera shots. First of all there is an
over the shoulder shot, in this shot you can see the country side and mountains
suggesting the location is somewhere foreign. There are close ups of the boy’s
face showing his reactions to his surroundings. There is an establishing hot
showing the foreign style buildings. There is framing through the mother arm so
that we know she is listening to the little boy. This could also be symbolic
showing that she looks after him and this is her role and he is ‘in her arm’
like a baby would be. Next there is an extreme long shot and action shot as the
little boy runs around showing all of the location, with mountains and trees.
There is an extreme close up showing the pleased expression as he receives his
yogurt. Finally there is a close up of the yogurt to emphasize what the advert
is about.
Regional identity can also
be shown through Miser-en-scène. There are mountains and unusual trees showing
that this is in a foreign country. The clothing is very traditional
and pale suggesting hot weather. The buildings are light in colour
also suggesting hot weather and they are made of stone, which is different to
our brick houses. Hey are dark and bland inside. The streets are
small and made of stone, not very defined or modern. There are no
cars or other modern technology. They travel very slowly on horses and donkeys
suggesting no rush and no stress. There are animals roaming around the street
and no one is angry about it. The people have very dark Mediterranean skin and
colouring suggesting Greek or Mediterranean origin. An old lady is
working and not using a washing machine to do her cleaning. The
washing is hanging between buildings suggesting good weather and good
relationships between the people in the village. They are eating
Greek yogurt suggesting that they are Greek.
The sound in the video can
also show regional identity. The diegetic sound in the clip includes the boy
whispering and shouting showing his foreign accent and language. The bell
ringing possibly representing religion as if you here bell’s in our country it
is probably at a church. You can hear the lady hitting the rug emphasizing that
she is working. You can hear the butcher’s knives scraping together emphasizing
how he was going to kill the cow.Non-diegetic sound in the clip is the narrator summing up the advert. Also there is very Grecian music being played in the background to enforce regional identity.
Synchronous sound in the clip include the gate opening, the boy whispering, the boy shouting in a foreign language, the bell ringing, lady hitting the rug and knives scraping together. All of these create realism for the audience and emphasize what is happening on screen.
In the clip a-synchronous sound in the clip is the phone ringing, this
is emphasizing that the clip is set in modern day despite no other use of
technology or modernization. This is showing that this is a very secluded and
cut off from the modern world.
From watching the video several times and picking out the above details the
clip suggests that this advert was probably filmed and set in a small village
in Greece.

Editing in the Doc Marting clip
In the first scene of the clip there is a lot of strait forward cutting to different people. This is done so that the characters eyelines match which make it seem as if the clip flows completely naturally although they don't.

In the clip we can see that Docs eye line is looking down at the men who are sitting down as he speaks to them. We can see as he speaks they look up at him, except when the speak to each other when they look at each other. Even when the camera angle changes the eye line is kept the same, this is to ensure that the clip runs smoothly and it is clear who each character is speaking to.
As the camera changes places to behind the plumbers back the action of him eating a sandwich is kept the same, this is an action match which is to make the reader think that the scene was all shot in one go. We can still see that the plumbers eye line is on the Doc so that we know that he is still speaking to him. Wherever the camera is in the room the plumber still has the sandwich in his had and his action is always the same or connected with his previous action.
When the plumbers son is on the phone he can be seen picking up the phone. In the next cut the camera shot has changed but the action of the son has only progressed to him actually being on the phone. This leads on very smoothly from the last shot and as the audience you would barely even register that there was a change.

How the Doc Martin clip shows regional identity
Regional identity - This is how the clip shows the audience hints about the type of location that this program is set.
From this clip we can tell that this program is set in a old seaside town that is quite out of touch with the modern world and is full of people that have probably lived there for generations.
From the clip I got hints that the Village is probably becoming a bit more modern by the way that they have go a new Doctor in who is clearly from the city and by the way that the son of the plumber seems to be quite interlectual compared to his father showing the improvement and modernization of the education in the village.
Nearly all of the characters apart from Doc Martin have the same accent. It is sort of a country sounding accent, the sore you would expect a farmer type person to have.
They are discussing local terms such as 'bodmin moor' which they believe is the name for someone who is a little bit mad. This maybe implies that the local people tend to be a little bit mad. As Doc Martin is questioning these terms it shows that he is not local and that the people in the village have their own vocabulary and shows how they are quite cut of.

They are not very fashionable and do not appear to really be with the times as the girl is wearing clothes that you probably wouldn't see many people wear in a town or city. Also everyone is dressed very informally with the exception of Doc Martin but from the clip we know that he is not local and is probably from a town or city. This tells us that appearence is probably not something cared about in this area.
The plumber is not doing any work and is just sitting there. This shows that he is not stressed and is laid back which is something that people say country life is like. His son does seem to know what he is talking about which is showing how as the newer generation in the village do know more interlectual things and is showing how the village is getting to be less cut off from more modernised places.
Everyone in the village seems to know each other or at least know of each other which is something that quite often happens in small villages. This is also showing how they are quite secluded and cramped as it appears everyone knows everyone else's buisness.
The clip shows the audience the very narrow old fashioned cobbled
streets with seaside shops, telling the audience that this is an old village and it is by the sea. This is confirmed when you hear the seagulls and see the cliffs in the background.

Homework - Analysis of the first four minutes of Vera clip.
Initial thoughts: From the way everyone except the man talking and Vera are sitting down shows the power of the people in the room. Vera is in charge and therefore she is higher than everyone else except the man talking as at the time he has the power for people to listen to him. After a while Vera regains control when she asks him a question he doesn't know the answer too, therefore leading to him sitting down and her being the highest once again. So far it is clear that this is a detective program set near the sea due to accents, clothes and the surroundings.
Shot Types:
- There is the use of the establishing shot to show that the characters are in the police room.
- There is close ups of each person in the room to show the emotions and facial expressions as they here the case read to them.
- There is over the shoulder shots of Vera and the blonde man as they converse. This is to show their facial reactions of what they are being told.
- As Vera continues talking the camera does close ups on each characters face to see the change in their reaction as she speaks. This continues till next section.
- It is clear to the audience that the location has changed as there is a long/establishing shot.
- In this shot the surrounding area is very empty which could be representing the lack of leads the police have on the current case.
- There is over the shoulder shots between Vera and the dark haired man to show reactions as they have a deep conversation.
- The camera follows the characters to the car to show that there is a change in location about to happen.
- There is an establishing shot to show the new location.
Sounds:
Diegetic sounds in this clip include:

- The sea
- The drinks can clinking
- the pencil drawing on the paper
The most probable reasoning for these being in the clip is to create a feeling of the program being real for the audience and to show the location of the clip and also make this real.
Non- diegetic sounds in the clip include:
- low dreary mood music.
The mood music is played just before Vera and the police man have a conversation that is clearly of some significance to the policeman character. The music is to suit the tone of the conversation but also sticks to the traditional theme tune for the program.
Synchronous sounds in the clip include:
- The Paper rustling
- The sea in the background.
The main reason for using Synchronous sounds is to continue this feeling of realism for the audience and keep the audience picturing the location.
- phones ringing
- keyboards tapping
- sirens
- doorbell
The A - synchronous sounds in the clip are also to create realism and build up the picture of the location.
Mise-en-scène
From the clip we can tell that the clip is filmed in the country by the sea. The things in the clip telling us this are:
- By the sea, you can hear seagulls and see the sea.
- Some is set in a police station.
- The characters have accents.
- Vera wears quite country style clothing.
- People are aloud to walk around with guns.
- Vera has a very cross country type land rover car that is clearly not made for a town.
- They are wearing winter clothes and Vera is dressed quite informative.
- A pier type structure can be seen in the background.

Homework 12th of september
Select a five minute clip of a TV drama from youtube and do a textual analysis using shot types, sound and mis-en-scène. Include images and video.
Mise-en-scène Doc Martin
How we know that the Doc Martin clip is set in a village:
- There are dark low lit rooms with contents that are not particularly modern or new.
- The clothing worn by everyone except Doc Martin is very rural, informal and old fashioned and made for more physical labour instead of office work.
- In the clip the doc is having trouble with his plumbing therefore the house is not in good shape and quite old.
- The streets are very narrow with old fashion cobbled buildings and streets.
- There is a single seaside like shop instead of lots of shops or well known shops.
- The police station is very small, village like and only has one policemen.
- The policemen is hoovering and not occupied with crime.
- There are no main roads and no major traffic on the roads.
- The school is very small and old fashioned and doesn't appear to have the same security measures as town schools.
- The shops seem to be selling local produce instead of foods from far away.
- There can be a fairly strong breeze in the scene suggesting near the sea.
- People seem in no urgency to be anywhere as they would in a town. They look relaxed and not stressed.

Sounds in Doc Martin
In the Doc Martin clip there is non - diegetic music played when no one is speaking and throughout all of the silences. As Doc Martin walks around the music has a sort of comical tone to it as if there is something funny about the way he walks and acts. The diegetic sounds within the first section of the Doc Martin clip include bags rustling, the footsteps of people in the room, the spraying water, the phone ringing and the cup hitting the surface of the table. These sounds are exaggerated but I think they are in the scene to make it seem more realistic to the audience.
Later on in the scene we here the hoover in the police station and the door as its opened and closed. I think the reasons fore these sounds and actions it to emphasise how the Doc barges in the room without consideration or courtesy. You also here the dog cry which is to get sympathy for the dog and show Doc martins uncaring attitude. The Doctor appears to talk louder than everyone else in the clip which I think is to emphasise his characters bad attitude. In the part of the clip where Doc Martin sees the teacher the music sort of implies that there is some awkwardness and mystery between the characters as it flashes back and forth between them. All of the music as well as having a comical tone is upbeat and happy music which is the complete opposite of the way Doc Martin acts. The music does however seem to match everyone Else's personalities in the clip. In the clip you can here sea gulls but you cant see them, the most likely reason for this is to give the audience a clue as to where the scene is set.
In the scene there is synchronous sounds such as the barking dog, the shop door closing and the hoovering, these are all things shown on screen as the sound is heard so this is to emphasise the thing that's happening on screen and to make everything seem real continuously throughout the clip.
There is a-synchronous sounds in the clip such as people shouting in the background and the seagulls, these things can be heard but not scene in the clip. I think that the reason for this is to continue to give the viewer a sense of reality from the scene and to give them a sense of location.

Shot types in Doc Martin
In the begining of the clip there is a master shot, this shows who in this scene has authority.Doc Martin is standing up, then the plumber is sitting down and the plumber is kneeling on the floor. This is giving the audience an idea of social standing between the characters. A little bit later the son stands up and at this point he is shown to be showing that he does have authority as he explains something. There is use of the master shot when the sink breaks to show the audience what action is happening within the room. The next shot in the scene is the conversation between the plumbers son and the girl. They have used the over shoulder shot to do this so you can see there reactions as they converse with each other. The next shot is an establishing shot as we follow Doc Martin up the hill with the dog. This shot shows the audience the location in which the scene is based. As the audience we can also tell the location because we can here a seagull telling us that the village is near the seaside. When Doc Martin sees the teacher through the window there is the use of the close up as the camera goes between her and Doc Martin and each time it goes between them it gets closer to each character until it ends on Docs face to show his emotion. This bit in the scene tell the audience that the teacher and doc have met before and it probably didn't go well as neither of them seem particulaly happy to see each other.
Second thoughts about Doc Martin clip
From watching the clip for a second time I noticed that the episode did contain some mild adult humour so probably isn't suitable for anyone too young. The clip is about a Doctor who has recently moved to a small town and doesn't really fit in. This is shown through the other characters reaction to him as he storms through the village. I would make a guess that the town is quite remote by the way that everyone seems to know each other and be on each others doorsteps. From watching the clip again I still think this would appeal to me and I would like to watch the full episode.
Initial thoughts on Doc Martin clip
I thought that the clip contained some humorous bits and it made me wonder what happened previously in the episode. I found it was entertaining and it would make me want to see the full episode. The characters all had very big personalities and it appeared that some of them clashed. The clip would probably appeal to teenagers and adults but its probably not for little children as it may contain humour that they would not understand.
